Margaret Storey, TIDE Project Officer | Donegal

The Donegal TIDE partners took a stand at Donegal Tourism’s Seminar 2022 – ‘Adapting to Changing Times’ at Jackson’s Hotel in Ballybofey on 29th March 2022.

The TIDE project was well received with brochures available to the Tourism Trade & Representative Tourism bodies / organisations with a promotional slideshow of the project outputs to date on display. The main output of the project is 3 Virtual Reality Maritime Historical experiences that will be launched this summer promoting the Napoleonic Era, Spanish Armada & World War 1.

A 3D image of the Saldanha ship (Napoleonic era) that shipwrecked off the Fanad Peninsula was on display along with Virtual Reality images of the Kite Balloon & Convoy Ships from the World War 1 era. The diorama showcasing La Girona ship which was repaired in Killybegs from Spanish Armada era was also demonstrated.

Travel Writer Pól Ó Conghaile from the Irish Independent & regular contributor to the National Geographic Traveller was briefed by Project Officer, Margaret Storey, Donegal County Council on the TIDE project. An overview of the new tourist attractions, it’s European Partners, the objectives of the project including the Themes, Toolkit & the key activities was discussed. The project was well received by Pól who felt it a good opportune time to launch the VR experiences this summer in three sites, namely Fanad Lighthouse, Fort Dunree & Inishowen Maritime Museum & Planetarium.

Margaret added that "a lot of the Tourism trade that were present at the Seminar were aware of the VR experiences that are being created by Donegal County Council which will create a new breed of Maritime Cultural Visitor Attraction to the host sites & was well received"
