A new tourist experience is going to be launched soon in Madeira by Interreg Atlantic Area TIDE project partner Madeira Tourism Board, allowing visitors to take a virtual tour through the places impacted by submarine attacks during World War I.
The augmented reality (AR) tour has been created using a mobile web app with computer vision technology to read images in 3D models. The digital reconstruction includes four 3D models based on reference images, all presented in a Web AR Mobile format. In addition, the tour includes text-to-speech technology with the introduction of a "voice-over" feature that meets web accessibility criteria.
The AR tour will be available at ten locations in Funchal (Madeira), including the St. James Fortress, Funchal wharf, Beginning of Pontinha, Monastery of Santa Clara and Fortress of S. Lourenço.
This exciting new experience is expected to draw many tourists to Madeira, allowing them to learn about the island's fascinating history in a unique and interactive way.
