"From Madeira to Hawaii", a book that combines comic book art with augmented reality!

TIDE project partner Tourism Board of Madeira launches its comic book, “From Madeira to Hawaii” in Madeira
On June 23rd, Atlantic Area funded TIDE project partner the Tourism Board of Madeira launch its comic book, “From Madeira to Hawaii”, in Funchal (Madeira) at the Frederico de Freitas House Museum (Madeira, Portugal) to an enthusiastic audience. The Secretary of Tourism and Culture of Madeira Eduardo Jesus attended to the launch event and also the creative minds behind the book, including Roberto Macedo Alves (script, illustrations, and organization), Válter de Sousa, Mónica Garcês, Samuel Jarimba, and Antony Brazão (illustrations), along with Rui Teles and Martim Pinto (additional Augmented Reality multimedia content).

Readers of all ages at the event were captivated and thrilled by this combination of Comic Book Art and Augmented Reality (AR) and the Secretary of Tourism and Culture of Madeira Eduardo Jesus expressed his enthusiasm and highlighted the importance of using innovative technologies to bring history to life, especially for younger generations.

The authors of the comic book were available to interact with the attendees, sharing insights into the creative process and the historical research involved in the project. Roberto Macedo Alves, the driving force behind the script and the coordination of the creators, emphasized that the book aims to educate and inspire, bringing more awareness to the extraordinary migration stories portrayed in the book.

Teachers, parents, and young readers alike expressed their appreciation for the novel approach of combining a traditional medium with new technology. Many considered it an invaluable tool for education and historical preservation, as they were able to explore additional content such as videos, photographs, and 3D elements overlaid on the pages, enriching the narrative, and providing an immersive reading experience using a smartphone as an Augmented Reality display device.
